The project consists of the layout and calculation of volumes of 70km of channel, with a flow of 25 to 5 m³/s, with different cross sections and their transitions. Being of such length and with many variables, considered it is a challenge with high sensitivity.
Location of the canal head and pumping station. The margin of the reservoir is a saddle point with rocky slopes that forced several approaches and calculations of the initial section.
The route in the first 20 km is complex because it crosses the Massingir village and it was necessary to evaluate different layouts and flow section lining, i.e. to calculate any change, no matter how small.
The route intercepts 700 km² of surface basin, supported on different types of soils.
Several alternatives of layout in plan and bottom grade were studied, elaborating models with at least 15 cross sections (different coatings) and their transitions. Finally, the volume was obtained to evaluate the earthwork costs. In all cases, the volume calculation was performed every 25m.
It was an iterative process, assigning typical cross sections according to the irrigation needs and difficulties of the crossed section. Own calculations were made for hydrology and irrigation, some revision with the HEC programs and for the linear work the MDT9 calculation program.
