Exporting contour lines to Revit

In this case we need a CAD drawing containing contour lines or polylines of a constant height, and we will load our surface using the MDT > Surfaces > Current Surface command.

Generation of Contour Lines

The contour lines can be obtained from the surface using the DTM > Contours / Cartography > Contour command and save the drawing in dwg format.

In order to use a CAD file with contour lines to calculate the topographic surface in Revit, we need to import this file first using the Insert or Link tools or options ribbon from the same Revit application (depending on our reference system, it is linked in UTM), enabling us to define the insertion units and the elements we wish to view.

CAD import options

We will pay special attention to the following settings options:

·         We will deactivate the “Correct lines that are slightly off axis” option.

·         The “Current view only” option should be disabled as a means of avoiding future errors in relation to misplacing objects in an incompatible view.

·         In import units, although it should not generate any errors if it is “Autodetected”, we recommend forcing the units, in our case to meters.

Our imported file we take us to the “Massing & Site” option ribbon where we activate the “Toposurface” tool.

Massing & Site options ribbon with Toposurface tools

Using the tools downloaded from the Topographic Surface menu, we select "Create from import" command and the "Select Import Instance" option, and graphically select our imported drawing, whereupon a window will appear in which to select the contour line entities. Accepting both options will generate the topographic surface and the corresponding contour lines.

Selection of Contour Line layers

If we wish to change the view of the objects we have generated, we need to configure our views using Revit, in addition to customizing the different entities of our project using the VIEWS > Visibility / Graphics > Model categories and / or Imported categories tools.
